How to use the urine color chart

Check your urine color in natural daylight or a well-lit room — toilet bowl water and artificial lighting can shift how the color appears. Match the shade as closely as you can to the swatches above and tap to see your verdict. Urine color varies throughout the day: first-morning urine is almost always darker because your kidneys concentrate overnight. The most meaningful check is mid-morning, after your first drink of the day has had time to work through your system.

What affects urine color besides hydration

Hydration is the biggest driver of urine color, but it is not the only one. B-vitamins — especially riboflavin (B2) — turn urine a vivid neon yellow within hours of taking a supplement. Medications such as rifampin (an antibiotic) and phenazopyridine (a urinary pain reliever) can produce orange or red coloring. Eating large amounts of beets, blackberries, or rhubarb can cause a reddish tint. Liver or bile duct conditions can make urine brown or tea-colored even with adequate fluid intake. If your urine color is unusual and you have not eaten coloring foods or taken new medications, treat it as a signal worth investigating.

When to see a doctor

See a healthcare provider promptly if your urine is brown or tea-colored despite drinking enough water, or if it is red or pink when you have not eaten beets or taken color-altering medications — these shades can indicate blood in the urine. Also seek advice if urine remains consistently dark amber or darker even after increasing your fluid intake over several hours, or if color changes are accompanied by pain, burning, unusual odor, or swelling. This tool screens for hydration only; it is not a diagnostic test.

Frequently asked

What does dark yellow urine mean?

Dark yellow urine usually means mild dehydration — your kidneys are conserving water. Drink one or two glasses of water and your urine should lighten within an hour.

What color should urine be?

Ideally pale straw to light yellow. Completely colorless can mean over-hydration; darker than amber warrants extra water or a doctor's visit.

Why is my urine orange or brown?

Orange or brown urine can result from severe dehydration, certain medications (rifampin, phenazopyridine), B-vitamins, or liver conditions. Drink water — if it stays dark, contact a healthcare provider.

Does urine color change after coffee or tea?

Yes. B-vitamins (especially riboflavin) make urine bright yellow. Some medications and beets can change colour dramatically. This tool is for general hydration assessment when you haven't recently taken these.
